Since the beginning of the project, the cities in the Migrantour Network offer intercultural walks and workshops for young people from schools and summer centres. Together we get to know the territory and the people and build intercultural dialogue.
Here is the story of Abdellah, coordinator of Migrantour Catania and intercultural companion:
‘In the ancient streets of San Berillo, which resemble the streets of old Medina, the neighbourhood is tinged with the colours of the Orient, creating a magic almost identical to the magic of the Arabian Nights. There, the protagonist par excellence is Shahrazad who, out of love and humanity, begins an endless tale with the mastery of a great professional storyteller to conquer man, the city and humanity. In Catania, the intercultural companion virtually wears the mask and puts himself in the role of the Sicilian Storyteller or the Garrab, water vendor, of Marrakesh. In this Moroccan city there is a square famous the world over for its kiosks and stands, just as in Catania we have ‘a fera o’ Luni’ in Piazza Carlo Alberto, one of the stops on our walks. The old kiosks in the historic centre tell old and new stories of encounters and exchanges.
For school children we carry out intercultural walks and workshops creating connections between old and new stories of migration. And at the end of the shared paths, they too become intercultural companions’.
