Migrantour Milan. The Languages of Milan, the Milan of Languages

Migrantour Milan. The Languages of Milan, the Milan of Languages

As part of the project The Languages of Milan, the Milan of Languages of the Department of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Mediations of the University of Milan, on the occasion of the university’s centenary, the Language Walks were created, walking itineraries that allow citizens to immerse themselves in the city’s colourful linguistic landscape.

The innovative collaboration between the university institution, curated by Maria Matilde Benzoni, Maria Vittoria Calvi, Giovanni Iamartino and Vincenzo Matera, and Fondazione ACRA, which through the experience and strength of Migrantour Milano and its intercultural companions, Ellymel Fernández and Karol Huaman, launched the project’s first initiative, a walk named ‘Nel Barrio latino di via Padova’ (In the Latin Barrio of Via Padova), which took place on 27 June.

‘An itinerary to discover the Hispanic linguistic and iconographic landscape of the Padua Street area, among places of commerce, spaces of conviviality and urban corners transformed into murals’.

Historical stops of the classic Migrantour itineraries such as Scuola del Parco Trotter, with its by now intercultural pedagogical tradition, shops, restaurants, the mural of the ‘Dante Andino’ by the Ecuadorian artist Boris Velis, are repositioned in this new walk with a Hispanic linguistic and iconographic key.

The second edition of this walk took place on 30 September. Our intercultural companion Karol Huaman and Spanish language teacher Maria Vittoria Calvi, project coordinator, accompanied the walk, with the special participation of street artist Boris Veliz.

The project The Languages of Milan, the Milan of Languages, aims to ‘raise awareness of the city’s multilingual nature, with the ambitious future project of creating a virtual museum of its many spoken languages, today more than 120,’ says anthropologist Vincenzo Matera.

We hope that these new routes will arouse great interest and be a source of personal enrichment, to create awareness of the richness of multi-culture and inter-linguistics.
