It is a very important opportunity for encounter, exchange, and dialogue among all the members of the network, who gather in one of the cities where our initiative is active. From April 16 to 18, we therefore met in Lisbon, hosted by the local partner Renovar a Mouraria (ARM), for three days full of experiences and activities. Both the coordinators of Migrantour in the various European cities and a group of intercultural guides from each country took part in the meeting. Most of the activities took place in the Mouraria neighborhood, where Migrantour Lisbon walks have been organized for many years, guiding participants in discovering the history of the neighborhood and the profound changes transforming it, encouraging reflection not only on migration, but also on the increasingly evident processes of touristification and gentrification throughout the city.

The program (which you can read at this link) included not only participation in Migrantour walks, but also numerous training sessions: a discussion on the theme “Changes in culturally diverse urban territories: Tourism and gentrification,” the presentation of new network partners and the results achieved by our network over the past year, the workshop “The City as an Inner Landscape” dedicated to the multisensory perception of places, an in-depth session on the international documentary festival on migration, and many other convivial moments.

The meeting was a meaningful and emotional experience for all of us. Here we share two short testimonials from Alberto, local coordinator of Migrantour Barcelona, and Ivone, intercultural guide of Migrantour Cagliari:

“For me, returning to Lisbon was like coming home, where I fell in love with Migrantour Lisbon during my internship at Renovar a Mouraria. It’s incredible how, eight years later, Migrantour Barcelona is a reality with hundreds of tours and thousands of people impacted. During the Migrantour assembly, we witnessed the connection and camaraderie among each intercultural guide, coordinating team, and city. Everyone is united in the belief that tourism can be transformative and help write new anti-racist narratives. Thank you for so much love and passion; long live Migrantour!” (Alberto)

“For me it was very meaningful because I was back to my country even if only for a few days. One of the most meaningful things was the fact that whenever one of us got there, we were greeted like family, even by those we didn’t yet know. It was nice to see people who have become family in previous meetings, talk about each other’s tours, confront ideas, and sit together while building bridges amongst our several languages, cultures, and backgrounds. Migrantour is the sort of civilization I’d love to live in. Each one of us is different. Each one of us has so much to give and to learn! THIS is what I take from every Migrantour meeting. We learn to know each other, by putting down the walls our society wants us to build” (Ivone)

… and as soon as the Lisbon meeting ended, all of us at Migrantour were already looking forward to meeting again in another city of the network for the next gathering!

This year once again we experienced one of the most important moments for the entire Migrantour community: the international meeting of our European network.
